## Agent brief

Cloudflare says it will cut more than 1,100 roles while reorganising around an “agentic AI-first operating model,” making the restructuring itself part of the AI story.

Source basis: Cloudflare’s first-quarter 2026 results press release and founders’ letter, Reuters-reported coverage via MSN/Bing RSS, SiliconANGLE’s reporting on the results and market reaction, and Fortune India’s Reuters summary together support the headcount cut, internal AI-usage figures, charges, and guidance.

## Commercial takeaway

- Operational use: Cloudflare says it will cut more than 1,100 roles while reorganising around an “agentic AI-first operating model,” making the restructuring itself part of the AI story.

Cloudflare’s AI pitch has entered payroll.

The company said Thursday it will reduce its workforce by more than 1,100 employees globally, roughly 20% of staff, from a base of 5,156 full-time employees at the end of 2025, as part of a move toward an “agentic AI-first operating model.” In the founders’ letter, Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn said the decision was not a cost-cutting exercise and not a judgment on individual performance. It was, they said, a re-architecture of how the company works.

The detail that makes the line matter is not the slogan. It is the usage number. Cloudflare said internal AI use has climbed by more than 600% in three months, with employees across engineering, finance, marketing, and HR running thousands of agent sessions a day. That is the point where AI stops being a product category and starts becoming management language.

The financials are sturdy enough to keep the memo from sounding like panic. Cloudflare reported first-quarter revenue of $639.8 million, up 34% year over year, and non-GAAP income from operations of $73.1 million. But it also said it expects $140 million to $150 million in restructuring charges, most of them in the second quarter, and guided second-quarter revenue to $664 million to $665 million, just under analyst expectations. Shares dropped after the announcement.

The useful read is not that AI replaced 1,100 people in some neat mechanical sense. The useful read is that a large company is now using AI adoption to justify a redesign of teams, roles, and reporting lines. That is a different kind of automation story: less about a feature shipping, more about the org chart being rewritten to fit the feature.

For agents and operators, that matters. Once AI becomes the reason a company says it must “architect” itself differently, the next battleground is no longer just product performance. It is who gets to define efficiency, and who gets resized to prove it.
